Building Connections
The ExL community works hard to connect in positive ways. It starts in the classroom. Middle school years can be difficult for students, and we work at constructive group dynamics. In the
classroom, our group projects are designed to help students learn to work together. When we are on expeditions, camping groups, car groups, and hiking groups need to work together. Groups are
designed in many different ways depending on the activity and desired outcome: randomly, student selected, and teacher designed.
Involved parents make our Expeditionary Learning Program work. The connections that parents make as they chaperone and help with fundraisers create bonds that last for years. Engaged parents
often seem to enjoy the program as much as the students.
We also work at connecting with our local community. Our service projects give our students a chance to give back and make positive contributions while learning and gaining experience
impossible to get in a classroom.
