What is Sustained Silent Work (SSW) Time?
This 30-minute period is set aside to help students to increase their literacy, receive academic support, and work on school assignments.
Students are expected to remain in class, and work quietly during the SSW period. Only through prior arrangement (24 hours prior) will students be able to attend another instructor’s SSW class. Students are not to use SSW to go to the office or library.
Daily agenda:
Homework/studying can include the following: completing work assigned in class, reviewing notes, studying for tests, conducting research, completing projects, reading ahead, arranging test/quiz retakes.
Suggested daily procedure for students:
-
Planner-check for upcoming homework/tests/quizzes
-
Students should generate a list of what they plan to accomplish during SSW, their teacher can then check to see if the student is following their own plan
-
Students up to date on work may do Sustained Silent Reading
-
Additional time for Social Emotional Learning activities
-
Additional time for students to consult with supplemental supports/services
Procedure for student requesting SSW with a specific teacher:
Student makes request for assistance prior to SSW to their subject teacher.
The assisting subject teacher will provide the student with a pass if they are able to accommodate the student request.
